Here you need to include:
why you have chosen this syllabus type
why you have chosen the topic(s) covered
why you have chosen this target language/skill
the rationale behind the structure of the course, e.g. why is it in this order?
how the course will meet the learner’s needs
By choosing a multi-syllabus to base the course on for Alberto enables the learning to be
structured in a way that is not confined to set and rigid outlines for the lesson to happen
in. The multi-syllabus enables Alberto’s learning to be tailor made for him as he outlined in
the needs analysis. By structuring learning around what Alberto highlighted in the
questionnaire as well as the interview, this would encourage Alberto to be more involved
with the lessons as he had a say in the way the syllabus has been developed. Some of
Alberto’s interests has been incorporated into the lesson to ensure buy in from him. His
interests that he indicated that he is interested in are; Environment, Science, Technology
and Current Affairs. He prefers authentic material to keep him interested so by
incorporating topics that he has an interest in enables to make the lesson unique to him
and what he sets out to wanting to achieve.
I tried to pay attention to working on pronunciation as this stood out for me that could
deter him from having conversations as he may be aware of the way he pronounces words.
That for me will go a long way in helping him to have better conversations, together with
improving his listening and speaking.
The multi syllabus approach opens up the avenues of learning to choose from and therefore
not limited to a textbook. I was able to use resources from TED Talks, YouTube and articles
to use within the lessons. As much as I tried to include aspects Alberto mentioned in the
interview and needs analysis, what I focused on throughout the lesson was getting him
ready to be employed in a possibly English dominant environment. Therefore apart from
getting to know him finding out what he enjoys, I thought that having a lesson where travel
is used would be good way to ease into to what I consider main purpose of Alberto
improving his English.
The reasons I chose to structure the syllabus are as follows:
Hour 1: This lesson I will use to get acquainted with Alberto, getting to know his strengths
and weaknesses and finding out more about him wanting to learn English and other
