En toda población biológicamente normal y capaz de asegurar su reproducción,
ambos sexos representan prácticamente la misma proporción (cincuenta por
ciento de hombres y cincuenta por ciento de mujeres).
Esta distribución igualitaria se observa sobre todo en las poblaciones numerosas,
pues en las relativamente pequeñas o locales puede verse alterada por
condiciones particulares, como la existencia de industrias, cuarteles militares,
escuelas, establecimientos penitenciarios, etc.

El factor biológico de la sexualidad es
relativo a las características somáticas del
cuerpo, es decir al sexo, que es el
conjunto de características que
diferencian a los machos de las hembras;
esto es con base en los aspectos
anatómicos y fisiológicos del individuo.
Por otro lado, tenemos las dimensiones
psicológicas y sociales que cada persona
va perfilando a lo largo del tiempo y con
ello se va generando una actitud hacia la
sexualidad que hará que una persona se
muestre más abierta a descubrir,
experimentar o por el contrario que se
inhiba y se sienta cohibida de vivir su
sexualidad.
