, Chapter 1: Approaching the end of year 2 Career
Development
Reflecting on my second year of hospitality management, there has been a lot of mixed emotions about
the studying program, the subjects, the teachers, the new ways of teaching, the assignments, tests and
so on. To begin with, there have been very fun and awarding experiences, like the HOTS game, where
my team has completely CRUSHED the competition and it was a lot of fun to emulate a potential future
managerial position. Even though, we did not get a high grade for the following assignment, it was still a
huge learning experience about decision-making, marketing, operating a hotel and so on. Furthermore, I
have achieved quite high results at most of my test, scoring the highest out of 108 people for the HOPS
test, as well as scoring the highest for my oral Dutch and written Dutch exams. Some grades were not as
satisfying, however it was a conscious decision to put less effort into some things that I personally found
less important for my personal development. However, maybe next time I should prioritize some things
even more and exclude the other, less important things. Continuing with the topic of tests, I have passed
every each one of them on my first attempt, which is a great thing on its own, but additionally, I usually
scored a decently high grade as well. As for the assignments, most of them were group assignments and
I do not usually prefer working in groups due to my overachieving nature of doing things. There were
some great as well as terrible groupmates, but I managed to find a way to communicate with every
single one of them. Some assignments I found quite hard to start up due to the lack of information given
by the lecturers, therefore I had to rely so harshly on self-studying to be ahead of the others. Yet, I think
I did a decent job at completing all of them.
My attitude towards studying has varied throughout the year, due to different circumstances. Some
subjects I found incredibly useful, some, on the other hand, quite pointless. Sometimes, I had to
prioritize some classes over the others just to stay involved and interested in the study. Due to Corona
outbreak in the last module of the year, it has been even more difficult to attend classes, since I could
easily watch the recording of the lecture and go about it at my own pace. Additionally, I found going at
my own pace very beneficial to myself, since I can distribute the extra time, that I would have spent for
lectures, for self-studying, or maybe other hobbies. As for what I could do better, I could concentrate
more on listening and not getting distracted by other thoughts, I could take notes in a more efficient
way, I could pick out the useful information better and not study pointless topics, but overall I think
those are quite minor points of improvement.
As of now, it is quite hard to recall all the feedback I got from the first 2 modules, therefore I will mostly
speak about the feedback I got in the 3rd(Practice) module and 4th (Design module). For my practice
module I have chosen to be a supervisor in housekeeping and canteen. I have gotten different first years,
and 3 sets of different managers, so I have received quite a lot of feedback. Most, if not all of it, was very
positive and even flattering in a way. Starting from housekeeping, I have connected incredibly well with
all 3 of my managers, and every day of work with them was outstanding. Out of all supervisors, I would
be the only one that they would treat as an equal to them. For example, I would be present at most
managerial meetings, I would be asked to give my opinion on the managerial problems, I even
contributed to choosing grades for my fellow 2nd years. Speaking about 1st years, I got to work with most
of them and I have heard an abundance of complements from them about being helpful, friendly, funny
and so on. The amount of positive feedback I got was overwhelming and amazingly flattering, since I felt
like I was respected and liked at the same time, which is something that’s hard to achieve as an authority
to someone. Continuing the pattern, in the canteen I was also treated like one of the managers,
attending meetings with PI’s, taking over some of manager’s responsibilities, etc. Periodically it was quite
stressful, but I think I have managed to deal with the stress quite well. Similarly to housekeeping, I have
developed a strong connection, or even a friendship, with my managers and some of my colleagues.
Consequently, I have gotten the highest grade out of all the 2 nd years, which was a nice benefit to it.
As for design, the whole way of studying has COMPLETELY altered, due to Covid-19 virus pandemic, so it
was very hard to “make friends” or receive any kind of feedback from anyone. But from what I have
experienced, my opinion tends to be respected and listened to, for example, in PBLs or smaller
workshops.
Examples:
“You were friendly to all students. You explained things well to the first years when i asked you to.
Moreover, you did the plat du jour a couple of times. What i noticed was that you took responsibility
about the tasks Dick gave you and everything, (all preperations) were ready on time! I really liked
working with you! – Anna”
