, QUESTION 1
a) Describe in your own words the following concepts and give one example of each:
i) Multicultural education (3)
Multicultural education is an approach designed to change the environment so that
different kinds of groups, including ethnic groups, women and learners with special
needs, experience education equality and academic parity.
Example: A child who comes from an Afrikaans home or a Sotho-speaking child in the
same classroom. You have to be able to appeal to and approach both learners in order
for them to learn successfully.
ii) Prejudice (3)
Prejudice is defined as a judgement or opinion against or in favour of a person or thing
formed beforehand or without due examination of the facts.
Example: You dislike some people because they do not share your religion.
iii) Assimilation (3)
Assimilation means that members of minority groups in society must conform to and
adopt the values, norms and language of the majority and the dominant social group.
Example, if a Muslim woman marries a man of another origin than her own.
b)
i) Describe any TWO different social groups of learners that exist in the school
where you teach or know. (4)
Sports groups:
The one social groups in the school that I work at are soccer players. These are boys
and girls who play soccer in a club format after school and on the weekends as part of
the school team. They are predominantly male but there are a few female players in
each team.
The other group is pupils who are involved in the choir as an extra mural activity after
school. They are predominantly female.
ii) In your opinion do the two groups enjoy the same quality of education? (4)
I believe both groups enjoy the same quality of education as they are from various
classes and grades. The school does not really elevate sportsmen and women above
those who are culturally inclined, so no difference is seen in the classroom. I can see
how this could differ though in a school where sport is venerated.
c) Explain how a teacher could promote prejudice reduction in multicultural education. (3)
It is the teacher’s responsibility to attend to matters quickly and make sure that no learner is
treated unfairly in his/her social culture. Therefore, the teacher should build a positive attitude
toward all learners toward different social groups within society by teaching them that no
culture is superior to another. Teachers should overcome the bias that the learners may
possess toward other social groups.
