Syllabus Type: Multi-syllabus
Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to improve their English fluency
and listening skills. A more detailed understanding of the pronunciation of technical
vocabulary within different topics (particularly from within the engineering industry) will
be attained. Similarly, the student will be able to hold a fluent conversation on such topics
that will also be of a practical use in his work environment. The student will also be able
to use translation sites, dictionaries and carry out job searches having learned how to
formulate answers and develop research and interview skills.
Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
I chose a multi-syllabus lesson type for Alberto. Alberto is already confident with his
writing skills so a course that focuses on listening and speaking skills is more preferable.
Alberto has also already spent a lot of time (over 8 years) working on his grammar skills.
As a result, working on English grammar will take a less prominent place in lessons. I feel
that Alberto may struggle with pronunciation exercises, for example, due to his accent
and would like a teacher who has clear pronunciation. This will also help build Alberto’s
confidence in this area. In addition, including some writing activities in the first few hours
of the lessons will enable me as a teacher to confirm Alberto’s strengths (i.e. writing skills)
where there is always room for improvement. Having been able to assess Alberto’s
abilities across a diversity of skills, this will enable the syllabus to be adapted and lessons
planed accordingly.
Since Alberto is also highly motivate to learn English for a number of reasons including to
advance his career prospects in Spain or get a job in England, a diversity of activities can
be incorporated into the lesson that will specifically focus on these targets and Alberto
will be well motivated to engage in these. Similarly, due to the motivations set by Alberto,
listening and speaking activities (especially conversation-based exercises) will take
prominence in lessons.
The lessons are well-balanced and comprise a diversity of fun and engaging activities that
will maintain the interest of Alberto and ensure that he is not becoming bored during
classes. The interests of Alberto highlighted in the interview will aim to be incorporated
into lessons alongside the topics Alberto highlights in the questionnaire that he would like
to discuss. Utilising such topics will also support the teacher in tailoring the lessons for
Alberto and make him feel more comfortable and relaxed in his lessons. From watching
