Aanleiding:
Na het behalen van mijn MBO verpleegkunde diploma en voor het starten van de HBO verpleegkunde opleiding
heb ik een halfjaar voor vast gewerkt in de wijkzorg en het hospice als verpleegkundige. In deze periode heb ik
veel meegemaakt op het gebied van terminale zorg en het geven van pijnmedicatie zoals morfine (oraal,
transdermaal en subcutaan via injecties en pompen) en heb ik de kant van de palliatieve sedatie meegemaakt,
waarbij het toedienen van dormicum (midazolam) voorkwam. Ik was altijd benieuwd wat voor effect het gaf
wanneer je deze middelen toediende aan een terminale patiënt. Om deze reden heb ik voor mijn Critical
Appraised Topic uitgezocht wat het effect is van het toedienen van morfine en/of dormicum tegen de pijn en/of
de onrust bij terminale patiënten in de terminale fase.

Verpleegkundige relevantie:
Deze CAT is verpleegkundig relevant omdat je als verpleegkundige in aanraking kan komen met terminale
patiënten, de terminale zorg en de medicatie die wordt ingezet wanneer een patiënt pijn en/of onrust ervaart. Je
kan als verpleegkundige ook in aanraking komen met palliatieve sedatie, waarbij morfine en dormicum
(midazolam) samen wordt gegeven. Hierbij is het belangrijk dat je de kennis hebt van wat de effectiviteit is van
deze medicijnen en hoe ga ik hier als verpleegkundige mee om.
