, Introduction
There is a lot going on in todays’ society. Frequently discussed topics are sustainability, urbanization, globalization,
food and health etc. And one of the biggest trends at this very moment is the use of social media. These topics
make people think twice about their actions and also about the consequences a lot more. Todays’ society is
becoming more aware. It is visible through the decisions they make. I have read a lot of articles about several
topics that influence todays’ society; individualization, regionalization, racism, climate change, digitization and the
LGBTQ+ community. Those topics interest me personally and that is the reason why I analysed them.

Trend analysis
Acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community – Legalization of same-sex marriage
• Demographical and Political trend
Since 1900 and up until now, many actions have been taken to achieve equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
And especially to legalize the same-sex marriage. Same sex marriage is legal in more and more countries. The
Netherlands was the first country that legalised same-sex marriage in 2001 which makes me as an inhabitant of
The Netherlands very proud. It gives me a satisfied feeling. And today it is possible in 29 countries. Which also
means that it is still not possible in over 140 countries. (Wikipedia, Wikipedia, 2020)

This is why this is an ungoing trend. It is a slow process, positively changing. There is a growing acceptance for
it. You can see a lot of manifestations in society, the tangible activities such as portests and behaviour of the
people in our society. Some people respect it, others do not. The ones who don’t accept it sometimes express this
with violence and abuse. (Nieuws, 2020)

The first big gay demonstration took place in Amsterdam in 1977. The Pink Saturday was in Amsterdam for the
first time in 1994. In 2007 the municipality of Amsterdam had a new logo developed for the Amsterdam Gay
Pride. With the motto "We Are". This motto can be seen as a counterpart to the city's "I Amsterdam" motto. With
the "We Are Proud" motto, the municipality of Amsterdam wants to position Amsterdam as a tolerant city.
(Wikipedia, Amsterdam Pride, 2020)

There are some contrasts within this topic. Basically there are three groups: the ones who are fully against it, the
ones who support it and the ones who do not support nor prohibit it. In a country like The Netherlands it is possible
to have a same-sex marriage, but in for example Afghanistan it is prohibited and you will get the death penality for
being with the LGBTQ+ community. The most important participant in this process is the government. The
government is the main and decisive factor for legalizing the same-sex marriage. And of course the society to
support it.

Related to tourism
This topic is also related to tourism. LGBTQ+ or Gay Tourism is tourism which is marketed to lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender people. Being yourself is not accepted all over the world, that is why it is important to travel to
LGBTQ+ friendly destinations. (Forbes, 2020)

Personal opinion
The topic about the legalization of the same-sex marriage interests me personally, because my sister is lesbian
and has a girlfriend for over three years now. At first it was not fully accepted by the people from our small village,
people stared at them or whispered about it behind our backs. This makes me angry and sad at the same time.
People are born this way and everyone should accept them the way they are. Gender, culture, religion or race
should never be a facor to stop somebody of falling in love …

Rokeach Value Survey (RVS)
The goals I would like to achieve …
• … Terminal values: equality, social recognition, freedom, a world at peace
Like it or not, this community is still not accepted all over the world. so the members of this community do not yet
experience freedom and security everywhere. And it will probably take many more years before it is accepted in
every country, and before the world will be at peace with this matter. I hope that everyone will see the members
of the LGBTQ+ community as equals with the rest of the society.

The preferable modes of behaviour in achieving these terminal values …
• … Instrumental values: courageous, independence, love, ambition
