PARTICIPANT A
A 1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PARTICIPANT
On the 21st of April 2021 I held an interview with participant 1 at the Windermere Centre Library
balcony. This participant is a retired social worker who is passionate about helping the vulnerable and
the disadvantaged group. She has been working as a medical social worker at in one of the hospitals in
Durban for 34 years. She retired in 2019, and in that same year after realizing that she is not coping to
stay at home doing nothing, she joined the local NGO which is working with people who are living in
and on the streets of Durban. In 2020 there was an outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic and the
President announced Lockdown alert level 5 and the people living in the streets were offered
accommodation by the council. Participant 1 couldn’t continue with her volunteer work. In August
2020 when the lockdown regulations were uplifted, participant 1 approached another NGO which is a
shelter for the abused and destitute women and children and was offered the opportunity to volunteer
till to date.

serious note my daughter my highlight is that I am Social Worker by profession who became the first
black social worker in Addington Hospital during the apartheid era, remember Addington was the

especially the vulnerable ones, that is why I am still working even when I am supposed to be enjoying my
pension’’

you dedicated yourself in helping those who needed professional skills, I admire you for that’’ (sigh)
Interviewer = What motivated you to do voluntary work with this organization and what is your
benefit?
Interviewee = mmm I think I was inspired by the work this organization is doing in helping the women
mostly who have been the victims of domestic violence, rape victims and those who are destitute by
offering temporal accommodation.
Interviewee = do you know this organization, have you ever heard of it and the work it does to the
