Gyekye proposes his own version of moderate communitarianism where he argues
that his position is flawed due to how it confuses the cultural structure as well as the
person operating within that structure. Gyekye determined the function of the
community by identifying personhood as radical communitarianism, his argument is
that a person is more than just an individual or social being where that person
retains certain mental characteristics from birth which are not given to them by the
community. The notion behind this is to give the community and the individual an
equal moral standing.1

It is stated that the goal of moderate communitarianism is the reconciliation of rights
and social responsibilities whereby there is a balance of social factors and individual
factors of a person.2 Gyekye elaborates that personhood is a thing to be obtained by
birth and not by community whereby this personhood contributes to a persons
rationality, memory and will which contributes to their individuality. 3 Therefore he
states that the manner in which an individual views the community is the correct way
that expresses and defines a person in the African context.

Gyekye states that these characteristics are responsible for the individuality of a
person and states that he retains moderate communitarianism by taking the rights of
the individual seriously but doing so not obsessively. 4

However Gyekye disparages Menkiti’s reason that personhood is determined by
one’s moral achievement as well as Menkiti’s argument that one becomes more of a
person by getting along in society. 5 Gyekye argues that Menkiti practices extreme
