, Assessment 1 - A school as an organization

1. Introduction
Any effective institution needs an organizational structure. This structure provides an indication
of the direction in which the school wants to move. No school is the same, each school has its
own dynamics and circumstances. As every teacher in the school has their own personality,
every school has a personality. It depends on the principal how effectively their personality can
be transferred to the people who work under them. With every aspect of education, especially
the management in education, there must be structures, a school without structures will be
almost as dangerous as a prison without structure. The comparison sounds very harsh, but in
the end it is the structure that brings order. It is therefore important that each school implements
and monitors an effective structure, so that everyone involved in the structure knows exactly
what is expected of them and where they stand with each member..

For the manager, it is important to convey roles, responsibilities, duties and expectations for the
parties involved effectively. A principal must be able to enforce authority to get his staff in order,
but he must take care of their needs. Communication plays a big role in the effectiveness of a
school.

2. What is an organizational structure?
An organization is a group of people who work together to perform a task (Instructor and Gigli,
2003). The organizational structure deals with how tasks are divided and coordinated. Each
person must understand their responsibility and role within the task. An everyday example of
organizational structure is when people go camping. Each person has a specific role to play.
This could be setting up and down the tent, gathering firewood, making food, washing dishes,
worshiping, and so on. For the group to work together effectively, each person must know
exactly what they need to do. If this does not happen, there will be a disturbance in the group.

This was just an example of an informal organization. If we look at the school setup, then duties
become much more important. To keep track of which persons are in charge of certain matters,
an organogram is compiled. An organogram indicates the relationship between all the members
and their duties or responsibilities. The organogram indicates hierarchy (Robinbmslf09, 2010).
Hierarchy indicates that there are different levels of authority or status.

The structure of an organization clearly outlines the roles of each party involved (Rozycki and
Clabaugh, 1976). The relevant members of the group must not only fulfill their roles, but the
work they perform must be reported to the authority figure.
