Homework 2:
1) Describe two agencies of secondary socialization
2) Explain how canalization may be used to shape gender Identity
Secondary socialization takes place outside the home. It is where children and adults learn
the roles in a way that is appropriate for the situations they are in (It also could be called
institutions for socialization).
Peer groups are the people who you socialize with which are in the same sub culture e.g.
Same fashion, age, school and likes. The influence of the peer group typically peaks during
adolescence. However, peer groups generally only affect short term interests unlike the
family, which has long term influence. The way the peer groups influence people is by
sometimes ostracizing them.
The mass media are very important form of socialization. Mass media gives us an image of
ourselves- for instance girls are taught to be thin and boys are shown as tough in films and
magazines this is called gender stereotypes.
canalization is that the games and toys are one the ways in which children learn to act in a
way that is appropriate for their society. Princess stories teach girls that they have to be
good, beautiful and thin, whereas boys are taught to be active and save the girls from any
danger. Many heroes in modern children stories are about males and this leads to
subjectivity and discrimination.
For example females get taught the roles of becoming the stereotypical future wife who
takes care of everything in the home and are manipulated into doing this by getting baby
dolls where a girl will have to look after it and feed it (Just like a real mother would
supposedly do). When given dolls to girls these dolls aren’t only girl dolls they also include
male figures who intentionally look tough and handsome which indoctrinates the vision a girl
should see a male. Also from the beginning girls are encouraged in indoor activities, often
‘domestic’ in nature.
While the males are encouraged by institutions for socialization and these young boys are
given video games and footballs which encourages them to participate in more outdoor
activities. Also story books you will find that men are the supposedly ones who have to save
the females and take care of them. Which would in the future cause them to get a job and
collect the money to support the family.
