Beatrice is sixteen year old and lives in a city that is completely destroyed. The city is
divided in five factions: Abnegation, the selfless. Amity, the Peaceful. Candor, the
honest. Erudite, the intelligent. Dauntless, the brave. Beatrice grow up in Abnegation.
Beatrice has to do a personality test that will show her which faction matches her
best. But she turns out to be a divergent. The government thinks that divergents are
bad so they kill them. Of course, Beatrice can’t tell anyone that she is divergent. Tori,
the girl who helped Beatrice with her test tells her to choose for Abnegation and
pretend that was her test result but at the election, Beatrice chooses for Dauntless.
She passes the Dauntless test, which is jumping into a giant hole from the roof. And
she changes her name into Tris. The transfers, who are the people who chose to
leave their old faction, start training the next day. They are being ranked and those
who are under the red line don’t get into Dauntless and become Factionless. Tris isn’t
very good and looses almost every fight. The second phase of Dauntless trainings is
easy for Tris because of her Divergence. She’s now on top of the rankings. As last
test they have to go through their own fear landscape and after that everyone is
injected with a new serum by Eric. He tells them that it’s a tracking device in case
someone goes missing. But the next day Tris sees that everyone is acting like robots.
It turns out that Erudite uses Dauntless to kill all the Abnegation leaders. But also a
lot of innocent people are killed. Tris, Four and a little group form Abnegation stop
Jeanine.
