Through what mechanisms does the Chinese Communist Party try to control the
media, and how important is its control for sustaining the political system?

Introduction:
Since its founding, the Chinese Communist Party has attached great importance to the
important role of the media in propaganda and ideological work. It is because that the
Chinese Communist Party has made propaganda and ideological work one of its core
task(Brady,2017). In the Mao’s era, the Chinese Communist Party defined the media
as "the eyes, ears, tongue and throat of the Party"(Brady,2017). This is the Leninist
interpretation of the role of the media. After 1989, however, Jiang Zemin added to the
definition of the media. He described the media as "the tongue and throat of the Party,
the government and the people"(Brady,2017). This means that the media has the role
of public supervision. Since Xi Jinping became General Secretary of the CPC Central
Committee, the government has further strengthened its control over the media and
re-emphasized the ritual nature of the Chinese Communist Party(Brady,2017). This
essay will discuss what measures and mechanisms the Chinese Communist Party has
adopted to strengthen the management and control of the media, and analyze whether
they are conducive to supporting the political system.

Why strengthen the control of the media?
1. Crisis of faith
Xi Jingping used the disintegration of the Soviet Union as an example to emphasize
the importance of "faith and belief" to the party.
2. The importance of the media
Take the Internet as an example. The Internet provides a new platform for challenging
state power. The Internet has accelerated the speed of information circulation. Some
political scandals will be sent to the Internet by the public in photos or videos, which
will cause widespread concern. Widespread political scandals even paralyzed the
Internet in certain areas. The Internet sometimes becomes the main channel for
organizing protest activity.
