Research Design: Week 6- 23/10/17
Randomised Designs and Causality
Slide 2: Venue
October 23: Hilton.
October 30: Hunter Hall West, Gilbert Scott Main Building.
November 6: Hunter Hall West, Gilbert Scott Main Building.
November 13: Hunter Hall West, Gilbert Scott Building.
November 20: Hunter Hall West, Gilbert Scott Building.
November 27: Hilton
Slide 3: Overview
1. Inductive and qualitative research.
2. Experiments, field experiments, quasi/natural experiments.
3. Cross-sectional and longitudinal experimental designs.
Slide 4: Inductive and Deductive Qualitative Research Questions
Deductive r/s means hypothesis testing= you start with a theory.
Inductive r/s means generating theory= you start with data and no clue about a
theory.
Deductive and Inductive r/s can be quantitative and qualitative.
Qualitative r/s (just like quantitative r/s) can be inductive or deductive.
Deductive= Are political upheavals a necessary condition for genocides?
Inductive= What are necessary and sufficient conditions for genocides?
This corresponds to the two entry points in the research cycle.
Slide 5: A sketch of the r/s process
See slide for a sketch of the r/s process from both starting points.
Can start with a theory which is the starting point of theory testing.
Can start with collecting data which is a starting point of theory building.
Sketch= was used in earlier lecture slides- Week 1?
Slide 6: Inductive Qualitative R/S
Within inductive reasoning, one or more of the following scenarios are typically
addressed:
1. Unspecified IV.
2. Unspecified DV.
3. Unspecified intervening variables.
4. Unspecified sub-concepts or indicators.
Slide 7: R/S Design and How Questions
Example 1- How do female high-school teachers who have been physically assaulted
by students overcome their fears so they can effectively teach?
DV= Effective Teaching.
IV= Unknown but variables revolving around the different strategies teachers
employ.
