Slide 3: Level of Scale
3 different types of variables= Interval, Ordinal and Nominal
Interval= height, weight etc
Ordinal= age groups, Likert scale items etc
Nominal= ethnicity, party affiliation etc
Always try for more fine-grained variables if possible!
Slide 4: Dependent and Independent variables
Variable= Takes multiple values across units however a consonant is always the same
When assessing Causality:
DV: outcome variable
IV: explanatory variable
Treatment Variable and Control Variable
Slide 5: Concepts and Indicators
Concept- Wellbeing
Dimensions- Financial, Material, Social, Physical, Psychological, Emotional etc
Subdimensions from Social- Safety of Locality, Relationships, Discrimination etc
Further Subdimensions from relationship- With Peers, With Mother, With Father,
With Siblings, With Grandparents etc
Indicators from With Father- Amount of Contact, Level of Conflict, Feelings of
Closeness, Amount of Help, Type of activities engaged in
Slide 6: Causality and Counterfactuals
Can assess Causality through looking at Counterfactual thought experiments
Counterfactual= not related to the facts
Fundamental problem of causal inference= you cannot observe both conditions, so
there is always uncertainty
Slide 7: (Mean) Causal Effect: Example 1
DV- Final Mark in this course
Treatment- Attendance
Control- Reading Materials carefully
Control- Intelligence
Control-Number of courses taken in this semester
Causal Effect- difference between attendance and non-attendance at constant levels
of the controls
