 3 different types of variables= Interval, Ordinal and Nominal
 Interval= height, weight etc
 Ordinal= age groups, Likert scale items etc
 Nominal= ethnicity, party affiliation etc
 Always try for more fine-grained variables if possible!
 Slide 4: Dependent and Independent variables
 Variable= Takes multiple values across units however a consonant is always the same
 When assessing Causality:
 DV: outcome variable
 IV: explanatory variable
 Treatment Variable and Control Variable
 Slide 5: Concepts and Indicators
 Concept- Wellbeing
 Dimensions- Financial, Material, Social, Physical, Psychological, Emotional etc
 Subdimensions from Social- Safety of Locality, Relationships, Discrimination etc
 Further Subdimensions from relationship- With Peers, With Mother, With Father,
With Siblings, With Grandparents etc
 Indicators from With Father- Amount of Contact, Level of Conflict, Feelings of
Closeness, Amount of Help, Type of activities engaged in

 Can assess Causality through looking at Counterfactual thought experiments
 Counterfactual= not related to the facts
 Fundamental problem of causal inference= you cannot observe both conditions, so
there is always uncertainty

 Causal Effect- difference between attendance and non-attendance at constant levels
