Research Design. Disseminating Results and Literature Review. 27.11.17.
Reference list: should be included in final word count. Although it could be split between
the reflexive essay and proposal section (or put all in one of the two).
Proposal: essentially an essay when you describe what you want to do in your research.
Something you are either going to do in your dissertation or just something that you are
interested in.
Research question should be in line with what we have talked about in the course. It should
set out to answer a question.
Aims of the course are learning how to do inference – as long as you do something that is
useful for theory (i.e. generalizable) then it should be ok. There will only be a problem if you
propose something that can only be applied to one individual case study. The most
important thing in the first part of the proposal is describing your question, why it is
important, and what research-gap it is addressing. Why this question, and what does this
question specifically detail?
If my theory is right – where should I be looking for data? Second part of the proposal is
explaining what data you are going to collect, and why, and how you will ensure validity,
reliability, etc. The underlying logic of what exactly you are doing in order to answer your
research question. This is the difference between the proposal and the reflexive essay: the
proposal is what you are going to do, whereas the essay is to do with why you are doing it.
You need to show the marker that you have understood what has been covered on the
course. You show what you are going to do, and how you are going to do it.
Reflexive essay talks about why you are doing this: why did you make these choices and why
did you decide against other methods, measurements, data-analysis, theories etc? Talk
about validity and reliability, as well as unbiasedness and efficiency, in detail. Discuss
limitations of your research – but why you are doing it in this way anyway. Talk about the
trade-offs that you have chosen to make.
The essay justifies your choices, and says why this is the best way to tackle your research
question. If you did it another way, why would it be worse? Focus either on alternative
choices or the limitations of your methods. Either way you need to show off what you’ve
learnt on the course.
Q & A:
How much depth do you need to go into regarding the construction of interviews?
You don’t need to go into every detail, but needs to be precise enough that marker knows
that it is a precise and valid way to answer your research question.
Conclusion: the conclusion is optional in a way – it is a way to wrap up what you are doing,
and give outlook on possible predicted results. It is just a way of wrapping up. It is not really
necessary to do this – but makes sense to structure your essay in a way that guides your
