In this assessment I will explain the arrangements for managing information between professionals
through legislations, code of practices, organisations and governed bodies. I will analyse the impact of
different legislations and codes of practices relating to information management on multidisciplinary
working. I will further justify how organisations and professionals work together to meet individual
needs while managing information and still managing confidential information. For this assignment I
will be focusing on the BTEC case study of Valerie B and Billy G.

Care Study 1: Valerie B. aged 24 years

Valerie B. was admitted to the community hospital, following surgery for her appendix which burst
before she could reach hospital. Valerie has mental health problems which began when her parents
died when she was six years old. Valerie’s surgery was complicated due to her being obese. She has
low self-esteem and cannot see why she needs to lose weight or change her lifestyle. Valerie lives in
flat provided by a housing association, but has been bullied by local teenagers because of her obesity.
Valerie’s surgical wound is healing, but she does not want to go home because she is afraid that the
bullying will start again. She is unemployed and receives Universal benefit. Valerie has a hearing
impairment but has never been assessed for any support to improve her hearing. Valerie is a
vegetarian.

Case study 4: Billy G. aged 18 years

Billy is homeless and was admitted to the community hospital by a passing paramedic, when he had
an asthma attack in the street. The city hospital did not have beds and so a place was found in the
community hospital. Billy left home following an argument with his mother’s partner, which resulted
in a violent fight between Billy and the man. He has been living on the streets since this incident. The
weather is cold and damp which contributed to the asthma attack. Billy has a visual impairment and
finds street living difficult. He cannot clearly read road signs or find his way around the city easily.
Billy has complained about stomach pains since being admitted to hospital, which could be due to
him living mainly on food from rubbish bins, thrown out by local restaurants. Billy cannot go back
home from hospital, because his mother has changed the locks and has refused to visit him.

In order to meet Valerie’s and Billy’s needs, service providers will be required to share information
with organisations in order to provide the most suitable service. Managing information is the
collection and storing of a service user’s personal information. This includes only sharing information
with important and appropriate organisations and professionals. Information sharing is vital to
safeguarding and promoting the welfare of service users. It could ensure that an individual receives

the right services at the right time1. Information sharing is key to delivering better, more efficient
services that are coordinated around the needs of the individual. It is essential to enable early
intervention and preventative work, for safeguarding and promoting welfare and for wider public
protection2. However, the service providers should ensure service users information remains
confidential by not sharing information about service without their knowledge and agreement. Billy
and Valerie should agree to transfer their personal information to suitable organisations and
professionals; they should also have the knowledge of what organisations and professionals their
information would be transferred to and what it will be used for3.

Confidentiality means keeping information safe by keeping it private and not sharing information
about service user’s without their consent or knowledge. Confidential information refers to all
information relating to service users as well as records associated with them, no matter in what
format the records are recorded in. Confidentiality is one of the most important values that has to
be applied when caring for others. It is important for health and social care service providers to
keep information updated with relevant laws and make sure the service user is informed. By
breaking confidentiality the service provider is at risk of destroying the trust and relationship
between the service user as not managing confidentiality may embarrass the service user therefore
leading to a loss of confidence, dignity and increased risk of harm 4.

Valerie’s and Billy’s information should be kept confidential in order to protect them and to not
embarrass them. For example, Valerie may be embarrassed due to her obesity and Billy may be
insecure due to not having a main caregiver therefore they would prefer not to share information
with certain individuals or organisations. Information can be shared with multidisciplinary teams and
multi agencies. A multidisciplinary team involves a range of health professionals, from one or more
organisations, working together to deliver comprehensive patient care 5. Multi agencies involve
working with multiple organisations and agencies in order to offer a range of support service users
require. For example, Billy and Valerie will be working with multidisciplinary teams and multi
agencies such as working with social workers, doctors and other organisations. Sharing information
