Verwering = afbraak van gesteentes.
2 typen (met verschillende onderverdelingen):
Mechanische verwering = afbraak van gesteentes zonder dat de samenstelling verandert
3 verschillende manieren:
1. Door warmte en kou ontstaan spleten in het gesteente: er komt water en deze bevriest
gesteente zet uit
2. Door warmte en kou (grote temperatuur verschillen) breekt gesteente af
3. Plantenwortels groeien in de spleten in gesteente en zorgen dat deze gaat breken
Chemische verwering = afbraak van gesteentes waarbij ook de samenstelling ervan verandert
Voorbeelden:
1. IJzer verandert in roest roodbruin gesteente
2. Kalksteen lost op door water (bijv. regen) ontstaan grotten
3. Andere bijzondere vormen door oplossen door het oplossen van kalksteen (niet de grotten)

Erosie = uitschurende werking van water, ijs of wind met verweringsmateriaal

1. Water (o.a. rivieren, watervallen, neerslag)
2. Wind (schurende werking zand/kleideeltjes)
3. Ijs (gletsjers)
4. Gesteente (gesteente schuurt langs de bodem van een rivier, maar ook stenen die zich in een
gletsjers bevinden)
