D2: Evaluate the influence of two major theories of ageing on health and social care provision:
The activity theory:
There are many provisions for the elderly to get involved in that fit into the activity theory. These are
activities that promote fitness and healthy socialisations. One provision that provides these types of
services is the charity Age UK. This charity works closely with elderlies to provide the best care they
can, by providing services such as day care centres, lunch clubs and befriending services. These
services encourage social interactions. They provide more active activities as well such as dance,
exercise classes and IT classes. Age UK provides services such as ‘The Cheshire advocacy hub’ which
works together to share the belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities and that they should
be put in place for everyone. This service also works closely with the elderly in the disengagement
theory. Another service that also works closely with elderly in the activity theory and disengagement
theory is the ‘Independent living service’ which helps elderlies with their personal budgets and direct
payments. The benefits from the community contribution charity ‘Age UK’ is that it provides
services for multiple opportunities, widely available to everyone as it is a free service and provides
trained staff in the required care. This would suit those in the activity theory as they have more
opportunities to get out of the house and take part in these provisions such as the dance classes as
they may be more able then those in the disengagement theory, this may then not be a good
provision for those in the disengagement theory as they aren’t able to get out due to maybe medical
problems, this may be difficult for them as they may want to take part in these services but they
aren’t physically able so they may become even more withdrawn and isolated.
Another provision that promotes the activity theory is called the ‘university of the third age’. It is an
international movement whose aims are to educate and provide enjoyment for retired members of
the community. Within this provision there are many services elderlies can form within groups to
take part in for example photography classes, dancing classes, workshops such as engineering and
woodwork, summer school and water sports. Their aim is to provide as many opportunities for the
elderly to create friendships and form new hobbies and interests. However, the drawbacks from this
are that it isn’t a free service, may not be in a reachable location and may not be easily accessible for
disabled elderlies. The impact of this may benefit those in the activity theory besides from that the
provision isn’t free meaning people may feel like they are welcome as it can’t cater to everyone like
Age UK however this provision be best suited for those in the activity theory, but for those in the
disengagement theory it may be very finically limiting as they may less mobile and may have medical
problems and equipment they need to spend their money on so wouldn’t work for these people, this
