Unit 10: Caring for children and young people

Why do some children need to be looked after by the state?

P1: Outline why children and young people may need to be looked after away from their families

The term ‘Looked after’ means a child has been placed into a permanent or non-permanent home by
the local authority. The state has a responsibility to provide for the basic needs of this child such as
their clothing, food and to ensure and secure their well -being.

both addicts and displayed domestic abuse towards their children. The police and social workers will
need to get involved to remove the children from this unsafe environment. The authorities inform

to give up their addictions and provide support to do so. (But in most cases, the children will be
