In the words of Nelson Mandela “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world”. Such a powerful weapon, but still there are about 263 million children who don’t
get any education. This problem is most common in Africa, about 29 million children who don’t
follow any education. Hi my name is Elke and I’m going to talk about education in developing
countries in Africa.

Could you imagine what it would be like if you didn’t know all the things that you have learned here
in school? Education provides financial stability in your own future. It makes you a part of the
society. Most people go to school, study and get a job. If you never had any education, it won’t be
likely for you to get a good job and therefore harder to make money. But school does not only helps
with education but also with behavior. Your always surrounded with your friends and you also learn
to work with each other. In summary you don’t only learn about school subjects but also about
yourself. So now you probably think; “Educations sounds really important.” And it is, but there is still
a lack of education in many countries. So how can we fix that?

Kids all over Africa are not attending school for many reasons, fees being the biggest reason. The
children's parents can barely afford to pay for their children to eat and have a roof over their head,
so what makes their government think they can afford to pay for school fees? There is a way that you
can prevent this problem from happening yourself. There are many companies you can be a part of
by donating money each year. With that money you pay for a child’s school fees. This happens in
various countries. You can support with a contribution or as they call it ‘adopt a child’ who’s school
fees you pay every year.

Another reason that children won’t go to school is because their parents tell them not to go so their
kids can help them get extra money if their income declines.
In rural areas, a lack of facilities is also often the culprit. Children have to walk for hours for a school
day. That school day often consists of lessons without books, without structure and often without a
trained teacher. Some schools don't have enough teachers so the classes are crammed and the
children are to learn at the same level. Some children don't get well educated because they are not
at the level of the class, and as a result drop-out of school and fail in classes. Lack of schooling and
poor education does not just affect the kids, it also leads to a low development of the country.

The situation is exacerbated by political instability in neighboring countries, which has resulted in a
significant number of refugees that also need access to protection, education, nutrition, health and
water services. UNICEF has been a great partner for Africa, working together to meet the
humanitarian needs of children in the country. UNICEF isn’t the only company who focuses on this
topic, but it is well known worldwide. You can donate them money of which they for example buy
school supplies, or you can do voluntary work.

Education combats poverty and is the best guarantee of a job. It also helps reduce child labor,
because a child cannot work while attending school. In addition, girls who go to school are less likely
to be forced into marriage or become victims of domestic abuse. Education and employment enable
women and young people to make their own choices in life.

People who lack education have trouble getting ahead in life, have worse health and are poorer than
the well-educated. Major effects of lack of education include: poor health, lack of a voice, shorter
lifespan, unemployment, exploitation and gender inequality. And if nothing changes, these people
