Title of the book: Pride & prejudice………………………………………………

Author: Jane Austen …………………………………………………………………

When was the book first published? 1813………………………………………

Explain the title:

The title is about the two most important motives in the books: pride and
prejudice (vooroordeel.) They are the two characteristics that Elizabeth and Mr
Darcy share.

Now summarize the story in your own words:

Pride and prejudice tells the story of Mrs. and Mr. Bennet and their five
daughters. Most of the action centers on the two oldest Bennet girls: Jane and
Elizabeth. The story focuses on their romantic adventures. The arrival of the
rich bachelor Charles Bingley and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy in the
neighbourhood adds a twist to Austen's tale. While Jane and Mr. Bingley fall in
love, Darcy upsets Elizabeth, with his proud behaviour and arrogance.
However, Darcy finds himself attracted to her strong character, even if he
doesn’t want to admit that. The story continues around the girls and
Elizabeth’s hate for Darcy continues to grow. Until there comes a breaking
point where she finds out that her prejudices aren’t always right.

Describe a scene from the book which you remember quite well. Explain
why you like/dislike this scene.

I remember the scene where Darcy and Elizabeth find out their mutual love for
each other. In this scene you really have seen them both make a transition into
other persons. You are not sure before this scene if it will work out in the end
and this scene really creates an impact. That is why I like this scene. It is also
a point of multiple storylines, which makes it even more important for the story.

Against what background is the story set? (Time, place etc.)

Jane Austen grew up on the countryside. This is also where Pride and
Prejudice takes place. The story is set in the beginning of the nineteenth
century in middle England. This is in the time of the industrial revolution. Jane
Austen painted a good picture of what life was like in the nineteenth century
with her books.
