Functie immuunsysteem: In actie komen tegen pathogenen die schade kunnen toebrengen. Er moet
onderscheid worden gemaakt tussen eigen en niet eigen (self-non-self). En het moet onderscheid
kunnen maken tussen gevaarlijk en niet gevaarlijk.

Pathogenen komen het lichaam binnen via de luchtwegen, spijsvertering, alles wat in contact staat met
de buitenwereld.

Intracellulaire pathogenen (in een cel zitten):
Alle virussen, sommige bacteriën (salmonella), sommige protozoa (Plasmodium falciparum).
MHC type 1 is nodig aan T cellen. Alle kernhoudende cellen maken dit. (CD8)
Geïnfecteerde cellen worden gedood. Vrijkomende resten worden opgeruimd door facocytose.
Extracellulaire pathogenen:
Meeste bacteriën en protozoa, meeste meercellige parasieten.
MHC type 2 is nodig aan T cellen. Alleen professionele APC doen dit. (CD4)
Pathogenen zelf worden gedoodt. Producten worden geneutraliseerd..
Hematopoietische stamcel lymfoide: B/T-cellen en NK cellen. /
Myeloide: Monocyten macrofagen/dendritische cellen.
Neutrofiel, eosinefiel en basofiel.

Cellulaire vs humorale immuniteit:
Humorale afweer directe rol in afweer (antilichemen, complement)
Andere mediatoren indirecte rol (cytokines (= signaaalstof die effect heeft op cellen door te binden
aan specifieke receptoren op de target cellen.) /chemokines (= soort cytokine dat tot doel heeft om
witte bloedcellen uit het bloed aan te trekken).
