TASK 3a: PowerPoint Slides - Produce a series of PowerPoint slides to describe (P4) the
different types of technological equipment used by a selected uniformed public service.
TASK 3b: PowerPoint Slides - Within your PowerPoint slides, explain (M3) in detail the benefits
of using technological equipment in a selected uniformed public service.
TASK 2: Booklet - Produce a booklet to analyse (M2) the advantages and disadvantages of
different communication systems.
TASK 3c: Report-Produce a report to evaluate (D1) the importance of using communication and
technological equipment in the daily operation of uniformed public services.

Communication systems and SATCOM: Satellite communication
Reasons for use, relevance to the Police, and the practical use of different types of
communication: The public services often work away from their bases and headquarters, as a
major part of their work is actually getting out and about and involved in the community.
However, the personnel on duty often have to work alone or in very small groups, and in
dangerous situations, it is vital that they have means of communication with their own base
and with other public services so they can deal with any situation they are confronted with
safely and effectively. Specifically, the police use a wide range of technological systems to
communicate with, which supports their work. An example would be the Police National
Network, or PNN. This is designed to provide telecommunication services and data to all
criminal justice organisations and police forces. It has brought benefits to modern policing, such
as providing a common communications platform, saving costs, improving information
exchange, enabling criminal justice agencies and police forces to share data, video
conferencing, and secure internet access. Communication methods must be ft for purpose, and
be available in all situations that public service personnel may find themselves in. An example
of communication going wrong would be in the London Bombings, 2005. The communication
systems used by some of the personnel would not work underground in the railway tunnels.
Therefore, personnel had to be employed as runners, to transfer information from below
ground to the people standing above. This is why it’s important that communication systems
are practical easy to use, portable, secure and reliable with good reception.
Object video: on Object video is a surveillance system used to monitor people for security and
safety. In large crowds, such as at a concert or sporting event, this technology is especially
useful. Object video can convert video images into data, which means the police are able to
identify individuals and track their movement, which can help detect and solve crime. CCTV, or
closed-circuit television systems, have intelligence software embedded in them. This means
they can track moving objects using networks as an individual goes between the range of one

, camera and the next, they are tracked using the camera network and the CCTV operator can
then view a range of footage that is linked to decide if there is a problem that needs
investigating. The benefits of object video include the fact that it is an effective 24-hour security
system. It uses resources effectively as it is automated, providing real time detection of
potentially threatening events. It is also suitable for both inside and outside use, using wireless
or wired systems. The police, military and border control now use object video widely to
monitor and ultimately prevent possible terrorist threats in places such as airports, transport
systems, and nuclear power plants. Object video is used across the world.
Lingua net: Lingua net is a specifically designed messaging system that enables real time, cross
border operational communication. Public services such as the police, fire and ambulance
service, coastguard, border control and disaster response teams use it. It is straightforward,
cost effective communication. Lingua net also has online resources to help people learn foreign
language, plus online translation services.
Microwave: Microwaves can be found at frequencies between 300MHz and 3GHz. They are a
form of light energy with many uses. When people hear ‘microwaves’ they commonly associate
it with the cooking appliance that quite conveniently cuts cooking times by halves. But
microwaves are also used in communications and broadcasting, as well as in mobile phone
networks. Radars use microwaves to detect the speed and range of objects. Before fibre optic
telephone providers, telephone calls used microwaves too.
Bluetooth: Bluetooth has many more uses than just supporting modern in car entertainment. It
is an open, wireless protocol which allows data to be transferred over short distances, meaning
the public services took advantage of it to connect multiple devices and share information. The
main advantage of Bluetooth is that it is cost free and efficient however, it cannot be used over
long distances. Bluetooth is commonly used for wireless networking between PCs, and wireless
communication using hands free headsets.
Video link: Video link allows different locations to be linked remotely. A camera, microphone
and screen need to be installed at each chosen location. A broadband line is used to transmit
the picture and sound electronically between the locations. An example of this technology
would be when civilians use webcam chat on programmes such as skype. In the public services,
the courts use video link during hearings. Evidence can be presented to the court electronically,
and dangerous weapons and offensive items can be shown by video without having to be
handled.
Internet telephone: These systems allow users to make free phone calls using the internet and
the Internet and Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. VoIP allows voice messages to be sent
and received over IP networks rather than using the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
Internet telephones have no cost and have easy to set up systems. However, there can be a lag
between the transmission and receipt of messages.
