Assignment: Why do some children and young
people need to be looked after by the state?
, 2
Introduction
The treatment available for children and young people who need to be cared for will be considered
by students in this unit. They will discuss the various modes of treatment available and the roles of a
number of different individuals and organizations involved in the safety and care of children and
young people. When their parents are unable to do so, they will also investigate the processes and
methods used to care for and protect children and young people. Learners can gain an appreciation
of the dangers of coercive and exploitative conduct to children and young people and the methods
used to protect them from this action. The unit has been developed with reference to the National
Occupational Standards for Health and Social Care and is an important unit for all students who want
to work in health or social care.
