The Dreamhouse Summary:

Title Analysis:

- House is far from the idea of a home
-

Epilogue:

“There is no better way to know us

Than as two wolves, come separately to a wood”

Simile- two wolves as human beings. Only one way.

The use of us, includes the reader

Wolves will have two different backgrounds, paths and perspectives and then come together

Novel starts with mist (blurred perspective) and remains when Looksmart arrives

House:

- Dwaleni Farm
- Creates an introduction and background to our characters.
- once a farmer village but now becoming a gated community.
- The surrounding = golfing estates and trout farms.
- Characters feel out of place
- Illustrates that it is now time to move on.
- The farm’s live stock has been sold and development is start- the farm creates
imagery of tiredness and lack of fertility- represents our characters)
- Ethunzini (rottweiler- the rest of the dogs have been put down) (LS views Ethunzini
as if they are Chloe “It’s still the same dog.”
- LS “Feels like a place that has never experienced the sun.” (not homely.)
- House is open, no security despite that its surrounding is a gated community

New Durban House

- By the sea and has a lovely view of the harbour
- “My (P) favourite view in all the world.”
- House she’d grown up in and “has had dream about it her whole adult life”
-

, Patricia and Richard’s Relationship:

“Never much of a farmer but he has the hands of one. She (Patricia) hasn’t been
touched by those hands in awhile”

“She probably comes into contact with them every day, but contact is very far from
touch”

“She has many strategies to silence him” (She typically uses wit)

“I was dreaming.” “Yes?” “That we were dead.”(R,P,R)

“To survive her husband by noticing him as rarely as possible.”

“Old bitch”

Beauty and Richard

“ She has come to know his body better than anyone- even uMesis”

- Speaks to how much she does

“Little left of the man he was.” Thinks Beauty and yet she is still frightened of him

“Even today they both know that he is the one with the power over her and that he will
never let either of them forget it” (Suggests that R isn’t as innocent and pathetic as
implied- not completely clueless for he still has the power)

Beauty and Patricia:

- Patricia feels guilty “She deserves a better job.”
- Grown more tender of time
- The sound of beauty’s feet on the ground now comfort rather than irritate Patrica
- Beauty will only answer P on the 2nd/3rd time (in the hopes that P will forget- illustrates
P overworked/ large burden)
- Power dynamic/ imbalance (class and social status)
- Beauty often makes tough calls, gets rid of things when Patricia can’t
- LS: “Calling the girl like she’s calling one of her dogs.” And then later “She won’t
come unless you call her like you’re calling one of your dogs.”

Looksmart and Patricia:

- “There can be no question of letting her slip past him- of sparing her, or of sparing
himself.” (he is going to confront Patricia.)
- 25 years since last in each others company
- Patricia taught him how to fish but Looksmart recalls being ordered and laughed at
by Patricia like “he was her toy, her toy monkey, with a battery up it’s arse.”
- Patricia is very patronizing and thinks that Looksmart “spoke far better as a child.”
- “She was always clever than he.” (he views her as better than him even though she
views herself as invaluable.)
- “She has cleverness in her blood.” And he has hate in his blood.
