Week 5- Individual Written Task (400 words) Anatomy of Strategic Leaders
Strategic leadership propound the ability of leaders in visualizing, creating, planning and
leading the organization, vision translation to the efficient and successful execution (Redmond,
2011, p.4). Chaneta (2011, p.19), articulate that objectives are the “end” and strategy is the
“mean” to gain them. According to Satterfield (2018), leaders learn over the history of mankind
and there is no “short cut”. In this essence, strategic leadership considers as one of the means
to achieve the organizational long-term sustainability in the competitive market. In this vein,
Strategic leadership should encompass both organizational abilities and interpersonal
characteristics (Davie, 2010). Also, Strategic leader should overcome few steps (BUDAK &
KAR, 2014, p.10-11).
Basically, they need to establish the ethical aspects (e.g. values, morale, standards).
The cognitive ability and conceptual capacity empower leaders to be analysts, creatives,
innovators and proactive thinkers who can conquer the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity
and ambiguity) world (Drozhzhin, 2019). This demonstrate the importance of strategic
leadership for organization development and success. Through the experience, basic
managerial skills and knowledge, leaders build the wisdom to enter the third of their authority to
lead the employees. The fourth step will be their courage and risk management skills to make
tough decisions which conduct to the organization performance improvement. The last two
steps for strategic leaders are their concern to build the core competencies and constant
decision-making.
We can consider the following as efficient strategic leaders characteristics:
Being Self-aware and passionate
Being active-listeners
Being Proactive and innovative thinkers
Strong value managing and leading skills
Being loyal and ethical to team-member and organization to build a trust
Make a clear vision and goal congruency
Strong communication skills and embracing team collaboration in Decisions
Being motivational and open-minded to encourage team success (BUDAK & KAR, 2014:
Kraines, 2007, p.4)
Within my workplace, the first concern is to define organizational values and credo’s. Our
Leader and supervisor emphasize on constant learning and team collaboration to enhance the
employee’s skills and knowledge. She believes in transformational perspective; hence she
delegates tasks but commands are mostly like an effective form of Laissez-Faire Leadership
authority. Working in health-care system need the strong ability in handling uncertainties and
instant decision-making based on rules, laws and regulations. Based on the leader anticipation,
guiding and constant feedbacks, both employees and organization lead to the development and
improvement.
