Unit 7 assignment 2 resub
How to respond to concerns about abuse and neglect in a care home setting.
There are many safeguarding policies in place which outline how we care for
vulnerable people, adults, and children in care settings it is important that we know
and follow the policy for each care setting that we work in. most care settings follow
policies from the care act 2014.
As I work in a care home setting, I have used this home and the policies in which we
follow. If I had a resident from my care home come to me and disclose something to
me then I would have a duty of care to that resident to keep them safe from harm
while also following the correct procedures in following the disclosure policy that the
care home has set of for us to follow. All staff within the care home should be trained
with the knowledge of what to do in these circumstances and how to report and
record procedures. All staff will complete mandatory training to spot the signs of
abuse and or neglect, and what actions to take if abuse or neglect is suspected. Staff
need to be aware and look for physical and emotional signs that indicate either or
both. It will always be in the best interest of the home to protect their residents and
keep them safe from harm. All reports must be made on the day they have either
been noticed or if someone disclosed information too you, without this information
you will have no evidence to back you up and the report would be hard to follow up.
Justify procedures for responding to concerns about abuse and neglect in the
selected health or social care setting.
If a resident were to disclose something to me then for me to respond in the correct
way, I need to follow the procedures of the care home and raise a safeguarding
concern, for me to do this then I must thing there is a reasonable cause to believe
that an adult is at risk of harm and or abuse. Working in a care home I work with
people who have progressive diseases like Alzheimer’s, Lewy body dementia,
Parkinson’s vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and many other problems.
When it comes to concerns about abuse the residents who have dementia are more
vulnerable to abuse as they may struggle to discuss their feelings and experiences
or remember what happened to them, it makes it much harder that the residents not
only can not remember full details they may exaggerate feelings like if you are
washing the face of a resident they tend to scream and shout and with dementia
their personality’s change and they can use language that they wouldn’t of used
before their illness.
Lack of training is an important cause of poor quality care. Staff may be unable to
communicate effectively with people with dementia, involve people with dementia in
decision-making following the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and care for
people with dementia who experience behavioural and psychological symptoms.
This can mean that people with dementia do not receive person-centred care, are
deprived of their legal rights and receive inappropriate treatments, such as physical
restraint and anti-psychotic drugs, that can exacerbate symptoms. Health and social
