This assignment consisted of two questions that you were required to answer. The questions related to
specific case studies. Your answers therefore had to relate to these practical scenarios. Answers

This question related to the following case study:

The Hotel, Catering, Commercial and Allied Workers’ Union (HCCAWU) and the South African
Commercial and Catering Workers’ Union (SACCWU) had had a running battle for trade union
membership over the previous three years at establishments in the Leisure Holidays group. Both
unions had started with more or less the same membership by organising 32 per cent and 28 per cent
respectively of the employees in the bargaining unit.
For some time, there was no clear front-runner in the membership stakes until one of SACCWU’s shop
stewards was found colluding with management. He received “benefits” such as a cell phone and free
meals for discouraging members to file grievances and agreeing with the outcomes of disciplinary
hearings involving SACCWU members. Although SACCWU promptly took action against the shop
steward, they, for obvious reasons, tried to keep the matter under wraps. However, HCCAWU saw
this as an ideal opportunity to boost its membership by poaching some of the disgruntled SACCWU
