Evaluate the Crime Survey for England & Wales crime statistics, referring to
reliability, validity, ethics and purpose of research.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is a victim survey which takes a
sample of the population, and questions what crime they had been victim of within the
last twelve months. It is the largest social survey conducted within the UK as it has 50,000
people interviewed. The trained interviewers go to the front door and question the
resident about their experiences with crime.
The CSEW can be questioned for its reliability. One strength of using the CSEW for
crime statistics is that it is conducted by trained interviewers. This is a strength because
they are asking the same standardised questions, which makes the results highly
reliable. It is believed that due to the same set of questions, interviewees' answers are
likely to be consistent. However, the reliability is limited. It needs to be acknowledged
that different interviewers can receive different answers. For example, if a male
interviewer questions a female about domestic abuse or rape, they may be less
comfortable to answer truthfully, compared to if there was a female interviewee.
Furthermore, if the interviewer was a white male questioning a black male about racial
hate crime, the interviewee may not feel like the white male would understand his
perspective, so may not report it. Therefore the difference in the results makes the
reliability limited.
One reason the CSEW is valid is that it uncovers a lot of crime. It covers crime
from the dark figure of crime, which is created by crime that is under-reported or
under-recorded due to police recorded crime statistics. This makes it a very important
source of understanding crime trends. In fact, the Crime survey states that 40% of crimes
are not reported. Therefore, they wouldn’t be included in the police recorded crime
statistics, so it is important to have the CSEW. However, the validity is limited. This may
be because the victim may be unwilling to report some crime. For example, a domestic
abuse victim may not report them being a victim in case their abuser hears and they fall
victim to worse abuse. Another way the CSEW’s validity is limited is they may be
unaware the incident was a crime. This is very true in technological crimes, as some
people dont believe they’re ‘real crimes’. Lastly, if a victim reports a crime from outside
the 12 month period, this reduces the validity of the results.
The CSEW can be regarded as an ethical way to collect data. One way it is ethical is
there is no obligation to take part. This means individual’s have the right to refuse to
participate or not to answer certain questions. Secondly, all the interviews are
anonymous. Their responses have no connections to them so they can not be identified,
which supports confidentiality. All responses are never shared with other organisations.
However, one unethical side effect of these interviews is that the trauma which may be
attached to the crime, may be recalled during the interview. This will put the victim
under emotional distress.
The purpose of the research is to focus on the victim’s experiences. Unlike the
Home Office statistics which just gathers how many victim’s there are, the CSEW allows
an indepth look into the day-to-day experience of being a crime victim. In consequence,
