1. La industria carcelaria:
El encarcelamiento es ese momento en que la vida de la persona se desploma por
completo. Muchas personas quedan en shock.
La NKVD efectúa estos encarcelamientos en el momento y lugar más inesperado
para conseguir este efecto de shock. De camino al trabajo, en un almuerzo familiar
o incluso, durmiendo.
Solzhenitsyn (que fue capitán en el frente de la guerra mundial), fue arrestado
mientras se adentraba en el Báltico; estaba allí pues planeaba encontrarse con un
amigo ucraniano de su infancia con el que se escribían cartas. Solzhenitsyn fue
acusado de delito de contraespionaje en aquel entonces.
Los primeros arrestos (en época de Lenin) se dieron sin siquiera la existencia y
soporte de un código penal.
Cuando el código comenzó a existir (cerca de 1922), su desconocimiento era
fundamental para condenar inocentes y cumplir con las cifras establecidas por
Stalin o Lenin en su momento.
Se realizaron torturas en las cárceles y campos de concentración (gulags). Las
torturas no siempre se traducían en golpes.

Se produjeron grandes riadas de arrestos; especialmente entre tres fechas: 1937-
1938, 1929-1930, 1944,1946.
