Topic 10

[Lecture notes]

The social context is very important. Humans are social animals.
- Empirical studies about the effect of social interaction on health (lack of social
interaction affects your health level)
- Neurological studies also show large effects of social interaction on neurological
activity

Potential problems
- Most theories do not include social interactions
- Source of knowledge? Most studies are done in the lab, however, is this
generalizable?

Interdependence theory: Individuals are parts of a social system, mutually affecting each
other’s outcomes.
- Transactive Goal Dynamics Theory: 2 or more interdependent people can become 1
single self-regulation system. Thus, sharing the same goal and going after it together.
o For romantic partners health behaviour (e.g., smoking, drinking, exercising,
diet, sedentary behaviour) is often similar between partners
o Empirical research: Changes in behaviour results in changes in partners
behaviour
o Empirical research: TPB antecedents affect intentions of the participants ánd
the intentions of the partner
- Empirical research: Partner-based interventions showed better results short-term as
well as long-term
- Empirical research: Social support works as a catalyst
o Can increase goal awareness (reminder)
o Partners may take over tasks to facilitate goal pursuit
o Partners can encourage in case setbacks, promoting self-efficacy
o Partners could engage in joint goal pursuit (joint engagement)
o …but, it can backfire
- Empirical research: Joint goal setting was effective in reducing sedentary behaviour
- Empirical research: Having a (not necessarily romantic) partner for exercising
increases the amount of exercise sustainably

Can we use competition for behaviour change?
- Empirical research: Yes, but it is not sustainable

[Berli et al., 2017]

This research investigated the role of couples’ support on goal pursuit for physical activity.
They found that:
1. Partner-reported provided support predicted objectively assessed implementation of
daily activity for the person who had the goal to be physically active
