1. Do you think Physical Education has an educational value for the child?
(5)
Participating in physical activities gives learners a means of self expression
They learn to explore the environment and express their feelings through creative
movement.
Physical activities help to reduce tension and promote relaxation
Learners understand the value of socialising better when we offer them a variety of
activities.
They learn to be contributing group members.
2. Changes in body proportion affect how skills are performed. Explain why this is so
(5)
Body proportions- when a child goes through a growth spirt, body parts such as their
head, legs and arms, affect their balance. Through these growth sprits children may
become clumsy as they are not used to having longer legs and arms.
Body size- confusion may be possible emotion among children as children grow at
different rates, some learners may grow very quickly while others may grow small
amounts over a long period of time. Leading to some learners feeling uncomfortable
of confused about their bodies
Skeletal growth and development- children are mainly composed of cartilage which is
softer than bones, which in later years of their like the cartilage turns into bone. This
making it easier for a child to break or injure themselves during a sporting activity.
Muscular growth- in children can cause restlessness especially in pre-teens in the
ages of 9-12 years old.
Cardio Respiratory growth and development- the heart and lungs grow in proportion
to the rest of the bodies skeletal mass as well as muscle tissue.
3. Why is knowledge regarding the structure and functioning of the body so important to the
physical education teacher and coach?
(5)
It is important that an educator and coach is able to recognise and understand a
growth spirt in a child.
An educator or coach should take note of changes in the body proportions, as this
may affect the child’s performance and to understand that it is not the child.
