- Concept: Horizontal Segregation
- Differences in the number of males and females present across and
between occupations. Such occupational segregation is regarded as one of the
strongest influences on young people's choice of career- individuals choose
occupations where they see their own gender represented.

Evidence One:
- ONS (2013) = more men tend to work in professional occupations- associated with
high levels of pay than women.
- Women dominate employment within the caring and leisure occupations - Female
graduates are more likely to work in slightly lower skilled occupations than men.

Evidence Two:
- 2020 Coronavirus impact: Coronavirus crisis will increase gender inequalities
caused by horizontal segregation.
- Close the Gap: Found that disruption of the labour market caused by the
coronavirus pandemic will have a disproportionate impact on women.
- The roles in which women are more likely to be concentrated- food services, retail etc,
will be less likely to recover after the end of the Covid-19 crisis- these sectors will be
impacted by consumer spending power, tourism, changing consumer preferences.
- Meaning: women are at greater risk of unemployment, enforced reduction of
hours and being furloughed.
