DNA-moleculen zijn dubbelstrengs, ze zijn opgebouwd uit deoxyribonucleotiden. Deze bestaan uit
een fosfaatgroep, een suikermolecuul en een nucleïne stikstofbase
Deoxyribose heeft 5 C-atomen, die volgens een vaste afspraak genummerd zijn.
De stikstofbasen vormen vaste basenparen:
- Adenine + Thymine, deze worden gevormd doormiddel van 2 waterstofbruggen
- Guanine + Cytosine, deze worden gevormd doormiddel van 3 waterstofbruggen (sterker
paar)
Uit de volgorde van de nucleïnebasen in de ene streng, kan je die van de andere streng afleiden. De
volgorde van de basen in een gen levert de genetische code voor een erfelijke eigenschap.
Allelen varianten van een gen
Het DNA in een celkern is beschermd door eiwitten, histonen (verpakkingseiwitten) spelen daarbij
een belangrijke rol. Een streng van DNA (146 basenparen) is 2x om een bol van 8 histonen gewikkeld.
Een extra H1-histon houdt alles bij elkaar.
De zure fosfaatgroepen kunnen makkelijk binden aan de basische histonen. Deze nucleosomen
vormen een draad en dit vormt een chromosoom.
