Joe Moran: Interdisciplinariteit is kennis indelen op verschillende takken.
Idee van disciplines is redelijk recent.
Aristoteles: filosofie is een samenbrengen van disciplines.
Ontstaan van disciplines is een oude discussie.
Giambattista Vico stelt: kennis wordt niet ‘ontdekt’ maar geconstrueerd door mensen,
voorloper van cultural studies. Deed hij al in de 17e, 18e eeuw.
Voor hem waren de geesteswetenschappen superieur, want kennis niet van buiten maar van
binnenuit.
Dus de discussie ‘the battle of the disciplines’ wordt nog steeds gevoerd.
Immanuel Kant: filosofie is verheven, want geen regels van de bijbel of de wet.
De universiteit was voor Kant dan ook een plek waar universele kennis kan gelden. Een
vrijplaats voor vrij denken.
Bildungs-ideaal: klassieke vormingsideaal.
Friedrich Schiller legde de basis en Wilhelm von Humboldt blaast nieuw leven in.
Het moet een mens vormen in algemene kennis. Vorming met menselijkheid als uiteindelijk
doel. Dit ideaal creëert wrijving met de verschillende disciplines.
Nietzsche: specialisatie ging over het vinden van een goede baan, niet per se goede kennis,
vrij kapitalistisch. Hoe geef je de samenleving vorm?

gespecialiseerde je bent hoe dommer zegt hij, hoe meer je op 1 ding inzoomt hoe minder
algemene kennis je tot je neemt.
