Unit 17 Task 2-
In this assignment, I will be explaining and investigating concept of person centred for people whose
living with dementia. I will also be explaining how safeguarding, person centred, and health and
wellbeing will affect an individual. I will link each to the relevant case studies.
C1- principles of person-centred care
Principles of person-centred care means ensuring care that is made for a certain individual. By
ensuring person centre care this means the individual can receive the bets possible care which will
also meet all their needs. By making this care person centre and giving support this can improve the
patient quality of life and meets the service user needs. It is important to provide person centred as
it meets the needs of the service user and empower the service user. This is beneficial for the service
users to improve their quality of life and care. By providing person centred care, this can ensure all
needs are met and dignity and rights are met too.
Dignity, privacy, and respect is important for the person centre care. These are important to person
centre care by this respect the individual and improve the care. Dignity means providing care that
supports the self-respect of the person, recognising their capacities and ambitions (SCIE, 2020). An
example of dignity and privacy can be closing curtains or shutting doors when changing a patient. By
providing dignity and respect this can protect these individuals from abuse or harm, improving their
quality of care. Due to these individuals being vulnerable, they are more vulnerable to abuse or
harm. It is important to keep dignity and privacy for individuals with dementia, as they are
vulnerable to abuse or neglect. It is important to observant the practice in your workplace and
report any concerns.
In case study 1, Raymond has been moved into a residence home where carers are caring for him.
when caring for Raymond the carers need to keep his privacy, dignity and treat him with respect. For
example, when changing Raymond, the carers need to ensure to close curtains and shut doors. They
have respected Raymond needs and wishes when caring for him. They have respected that Raymond
wanted to have some freedom where he counts his own money. It is important for Raymond to
receive person centred care to meet all his needs. For example, he needs are met by him being
restlessness at night where staff sit with him at night. By providing Raymond person centred care,
his needs will be met and the staff around him should ensure dignity and privacy. By providing
person centred care this can improve his quality of care and improving his experience within the
residence.
In case study 2, Anjeela has moved into a residence home where she is not quite happy about this.
The staff caring for Anjeela means to ensure they are providing dignity, privacy, and respect. The
carers need to ensure they respect her religious beliefs and her cultures in order to improve her
quality of life. When providing personal care for Anjeela, they need to ensure privacy which could be
closing doors or curtains. Here care should be person centred where this means the care meets all
Anjeela needs.
In case study 3, Isobel carers will need to ensure they are providing person centred care whilst
keeping her dignity and privacy. As Isobel has lost ability to dress herself in the current order, staff
may need to assist which means they need to ensure dignity and privacy. If this is not ensured, this is
, affected Isobel, leaving her to feel exposed or low mood. Isobel care plan should be person centred
to her where meeting needs such as her medication as she feels it difficult to swallow.
Empowering service users means promoting independence and choices for the individual. This will
help the individual’s independence and improve their quality of life. We can empower these
individuals by giving choice such as giving choice on what they want to wear. It is important to try
and take every opportunity to empower and promote independence in service user. When caring for
dementia patients we should be patient with them when we are promoting their independence. We
need to respect their rights and respect their choices. We can do this by doing activities that could
interest them such as watching an old film. Or empower these service users by giving independence
such as letting them pay for things themselves.
In case study 1, it is important to empower Raymond by giving him choice and independence, this
will help Raymond by improving his mood and quality of life. They empower by encouraging his
interest with medical matters and brought in magazines for him. They also empower Raymond by
encouraging him to count his own money and giving him independence. By empowering Raymond
this will help his quality of life and improve his mood, helping him feel independent.
In case study 2, the staff caring for Anjeela should empower her which will increase her confidence
and independence. They show an example of this by making decisions in her own care and telling
her opinions being heard. The staff have respected Anjeela choices when it comes it religion and
interests and empower her by giving her choice. An example of this is her being involved in decision
making.
In case study 3, Isobel has been empowered by her carers by given choice and dressing herself.
Isobel does not want help when dressing so her carers offer assistance and allow her to make
decisions as much as possible. Isobel still wants to keep her independence; this can be done by
empowerment which this case shows a good example of. by giving Isobel choice and empowerment,
this will improve her quality of care and improve her mood.
Recognition of cultural and religious differences is important when working for dementia patients.
Everyone has their own beliefs and religion, where we need to respect these and include these
beliefs in their care. The UK is very diverse where many people have different religions. It is
important to celebrate their holidays and include them, also called inclusion. Inclusion is a sense of
belonging and using this will help the service user quality of life. By respecting these religions, we
can respect the individuals. If religion or culture differences are disrespected in the service, this
would be discrimination and lead to the service user feeling excluded. Discrimination should not be
happening in these services; staff should be trained on how to spot discrimination and how to deal
with it.
Advocacy means speaking for someone else behalf, this could be for if the service user needs help or
to make sure their opinion is across. These service users may not have the ability to speak up due to
their condition. By having an advocate, this can empower the individual and improve their care.
In case study 1, it is important that carers when caring for Raymond, we respect his religion and
culture beliefs. However, the case study does not say if he has any religion, if so, his carers need to
ensure to respect and express his religion. Raymond may need an advocacy when making decisions
for himself, due to the dementia he may forgot certain information. By having an advocate means
Raymond concerns and his voice is being here and involved in his care.
