L.Q: What was the significance of the Freedom Summer and
the Mississippi Murders 1964?
Voting and Legislation
Do now:
Voting tests
KKK
Eisenhower signing 1957 civil rights act
The voter education project
The goal of the Freedom Summer:
MLK and SCLC (drawn by Eisenhower) continued to
encourage black Americans to register to vote with the
successes of the VEP and from the Civil Rights Acts of
1957 and 1960
This wasn’t happening everywhere, and the acts weren’t
enforced well in the south where white opposition
groups were able to restrict them from voting e.g.
opposition from society, WCC, KKK
Worst state for African Americans with voter
registration problems is Mississippi
Freedom Summer, 1964:
SNCC and CORE set up the ‘Freedom Summer’ with a
thousand volunteers went to Mississippi to help boost
voter registration
Most volunteers were white college students from
respectable families – their social status would make
any violence against them attract the media and make
the world feel sympathy for them
