Play: Othello
Act 1 Scene 1
Summary:
The play starts with a conversation between Roderigo and Iago. The play is
revolving around Iago and his plans and nature. Where we see Iago as a negative
character and he tells the first reason to hate Othello which is that he basically chose
someone over him (Iago) for his lieutenant. We further get to know that Iago has a
group of men as he says that three of Venice’s noble men talked to Othello to make
me his lieutenant. Iago describes Cassio as a book keeper and further says that he
cannot even control his own wife and he has no military understanding. Iago says ‘I
am not what I am’ and this line shows that he is two faced from inside and that he
appears differently and acts differently. We see that Iago truly hates Othello as he
says that he is serving him to take advantage and that we all cannot be masters nor
all masters are supposed to be served, and that there are two kinds of servants one
who is honest and loyal to his master and the other is the one who looks dutiful but
he’s looking out for himself and he Iago then mentions that he is the second type of
servant. We see that Roderigo is in love with Desdemona but she is in love with
Othello. Iago and Roderigo make a plan of going up to Desdemona’s father and spoil
rumor and destroy happiness. They both go to Brabantio (Desdemona’s Father) and
tell him that he has been robbed by Othello as he has taken Desdemona and now,
he is marrying her. After their conversation, Brabantio is against Othello and goes to
find him.
