MATERIALEN: LEERPAD 3 - KUNSTSTOFFEN (SV)Wat zijn kunststoffen?
KUNSTSTOFFEN = Materialen die niet in min of meer gebruiksklare toestand in de natuur
aangetroffen worden, maar die langs “kunstmatige” weg verkregen worden.
Vb: glas, cement, staal, keramische producten, …
‘Kunststoffen’ of ‘plastics’ zijn synthetische macromoleculaire stoffen, die overwegend van
organische aard zijn en die door plastische vormgeving hun materiaalfunctie verkrijgen.’
4 essentiële aspecten:
1) Macromoleculair karakter:
KS zijn opgebouwd uit zeer grote moleculen vandaar macromoleculen:
“macros” = groot -> een zeer groot aantal atomen minimum ca.1000
Er bestaan macromoleculen die bestaan uit min. 1 000 000 atomen
Door macromoleculaire structuur zullen KS aparte plaats innemen onder de materialen.
Macromoleculaire structuur is bepalend voor de eigenschappen van KS.
2) Organisch aard:
KS zijn koolstofverbindingen en zijn dus organische stoffen.
1 grote uitzondering: Groep van de siliconen!
→ De hoofdstructuur is niet van organische aard, maar bestaat uit silicium en zuurstof.
Deze ‘hetero’ KS hebben speciale eigenschappen door de anorganische hoofdstructuur en
aanwezigheid van organische zijgroepen, met hun gemengd anorganisch/organische eigenschappen.
3) Plastische vormgeving:
We hebben hier te doen met materialen die ergens op de weg van grondstof naar eindproduct of
gebruiksvoorwerp een fase van plastische vormgeving ondergaan.
Hiervoor is er een grote verscheidenheid van technieken ontwikkeld.
