GrammarApostophes:
used to show possession - something belongs to somone or something
used to show ommission/contractions - when something has been missed out
o its = possession, it's = it has/it is
o you are = you're
for names that end with "s", the style guide says we must put "s's" on the end
o e.g "James's"
Collective Nouns:
the Storyhub style guide says we have to refer to organisations and groups as singular
o e.g the council is, the university has, etc
excpet bands and sports teams which are plural
o e.g Derby County have, The Beatles are, etc.
Prepositons:
in vs on
o British = in (you live in a street, you are in a team, children play in a street)
o America = on (you live on a street, you are on a team).
Hyphens:
hyphens are used to clarify certain things/link words that belong together
o e.g father-to-be assaulted vs father to be assaulted
usually goes before the noun in a sentence.
o the two-year-old child vs the child is two years old.
hyphens not needed if the descriptors used are adverbs.
