Diversity and inclusion have tremendous advantages in the workplace. A broader mix of
colleagues with different backgrounds brings diversity of thought into the room. There are
studies that show that companies with more diversity are more productive, and it can be seen
in the bottom line. Once the team is built it’s important to understand exactly what your team
needs to be working on. Define key goals and understand your team’s capacity to execute
them. Make sure you have processes and procedures in place and a way to track the progress.
You also want to get buy in from the team by giving them the opportunity to weigh in on the
task at hand.
Good managers ensure that their team members have clarity on roles and tasks. You want to
take the guess work out the task at hand. The more clarity they have the more productive they
will be. The works with the communication piece of enhancing team effectiveness. Managers
must make time for communication. Teams need time to communicate, which makes finding
that time an important objective. Setting aside time for meetings and quick syncs or project
updates can help your team build trust and communicate effectively. Giving your team time to
communicate will also allow them to opportunity to celebrate each other or reach out about
issues.
One communication piece that I believe need to be managed very well to enhance
productivity and that is team meetings. Meetings can take up a lot of time and can contribute
to slowing down productivity if not managed well. I have literally been in organizations that
will have meetings about upcoming meetings. While meetings can be a useful strategy and
process for sharing work progress and connecting with others, excessive and poorly run
meetings can have a significant negative effect on productivity and employee motivation.
Some important tips for conducting good meetings are setting strict time limits, create and
distribute a meeting agenda ahead of time, decide on clear, assigned action items for after the
meeting, send follow- up information and details, don't hold status update meetings, start on
time, put a cap on the meeting size, give people an out, and keep the conversation moving.
Good productive meetings a are key to enhancing overall team productivity.
I have the opportunity on my job to rebuild a team from the ground up. One key piece I
started with was someone was very knowledgeable in the operational side of my project. I
knew this was someone I could lean on to keep the task afloat while I built the team out and
would also be good to train new team members if need be. My next goal was to find
complimentary pieces to my cornerstone person. They didn’t have to know our area very well
be did have to perform and work well in the area they were assigned. As long as they had the
