Een flagellaire darmparasiet. In de darm van de gastheer wordt door de trofozoiet (de vegetatieve vorm) een cyste gevormd, die met
de stoelgang wordt uitgescheiden. Cysten worden gedood door verhitting (besmet water kan gedurende enkele minuten gekookt
worden), chlorering, ozonisatie en uitdroging.
