QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. Reasons why Khoekhoe were sometimes willing to cooperate with Europeans before
1652

During the earlier years many Khoekhoe people believed that the Europeans were not going
to permanently settle on their land1. They merely assumed that they were passing by therefore
they did not feel threatened; however they were curious and suspicious. Due to this
assumption the Khoekhoe were willing to trade their livestock with the Dutch as they were
attracted to the luxury items that the Europeans brought along with them, like alcohol and
tobacco. Another reason that the Khoekhoe community also cooperated with the European
“travellers” was because they were excited to get a hold of iron as it could be used for making
iron-tipped spears and arrows that would not only assist them in hunting but could also
improve their defence activities. Furthermore, some chiefs often showed support to the Dutch
men as they assisted during the Dutch-Khoekhoe wars fought against other Khoekhoe chiefs
due to an effect of rivalry amongst the different Khoekhoe communities. They were even
some people who took part in protecting the settlement as they believed that they were going
to get a favoured treatment from the VOC in relation to the trading of goods.
