,Before reading

I read the book because we had to read it for English. I didn’t saw the film version of the
book. I did not really know what to expect from the book. We did talk about it before we
started to read it. We were told it was about the IRA and they lived in the war.

Samenvatting

Chapter 1

The main character thinks his mom and dad should have stayed in New York
instead of moving back to Ireland. The main character had a bad childhood, a
miserable Irish Catholic childhood. The father of the main character was born
on a farm in Toome, Country Antrim. He fought with the Old IRA and he
wound up fugitive with a price on his head. He returned back to Belfast and
later he died in the Royal Victoria Hospital. The mother of the main character
grew up in a Limerick slum with her mother, two brothers, Thomas and
Patrick, and a sister, Agnes. She never saw her father, who had run off to
Australia weeks before her birth. On the feast of St. Joseph, Malachy and
Angela got married and in August a child was born. While dad was drunk he
decided to register the name of the child and because he was drunk the child
was named Male. Later they baptized the child and named him Francis after
his father's father and the saint of Assisi. The baptism went all wrong. Angela
was crying after the baptism and she didn't stop with it. Her family told her
she could have expected something like this and she should stop crying. Her
family also told her she shouldn't have married Malachy and that she
shouldn't have more kids with him. A year later another child was born named
Malachy, now her family wanted nothing to do with her till she came to her
senses. Two years later a twin gets born: Oliver and Eugene. Frankie's mother
says she is tired and that it is too hard for her to have four boys. She would
do anything to have a little girl al by herself. Dad often has to search for a
new job. He also often comes home with the smell of whiskey. Angela is worn
out a want that dad comes home with money for food instead of saying that
Ireland is suffering. When dad gets a job Angela is cheerful. Everybody he
beings his wages home for two weeks. But in the third week he doesn't bring
home his wages. They don't have nice dinner anymore and Angela doesn't
sing for the kids anymore. On a Friday dad arrives home and he is drunk. Dad
promises all his kids a nickel if they die for Ireland. Angela wants dad to leave

, the kids alone. One night Angela and her kids look for in the bars for dad and
they can't find him. Every time when Dad an Angela have a argue, Malachy
and Frankie have to go to the playground or elsewhere. The neighbours take
care of them. Later a new child gets born. It's a girl and she is called
Margaret. After dad comes home from looking for a job he songs for Margaret
while he is carrying her in his arms. He also dances with Margaret in his arms.
The Italian man of the grocery store gives fruit to Frankie while he is playing
on the playground. They got food from his grocery store and Angela couldn't
pay it back yet. On a night Margaret dies. Angela is heartbroken by it. She
stays in bed and doesn't move. Malachy and Frankie have to feed the twins
but there is almost no food in the house and they don't have money to buy
any. And dad went away to drink and buy cigarettes. In this bad time the
neighbours help Angela, they take care for her and for the children. Dad
returned in the middle of the night and he wakes Malachy and Frankie. He
teaches them a song and he tells them to die for Ireland. The neighbours take
care for the kids and Angela. Their dad keeps looking for a job and the Italian
man of the grocery store keeps giving fruit and grocery to Frankie. Frankie
and Malachy have to take care for the twins. Angela's cousins come to help
her. They write a letter to their au t Margaret. They ask her for help.

grandma and granddad McCourt. They say it is worse there than in America
and that dad can't find a job there either. Also all their aunts are there. They
go to Dublin. Dad and Frankie go to a man of the IRA called Mr. Heggarty. Dad
wants to get money but Mr. Heggarty doesn't want to give him anything
because he can't prove he worked for the IRA. When they are back at the bus
place Angela and the kids are asleep. A police walks by and asks them why
they are at the bus place this late. They tell what's going on and the police
take them to the police station and there the police are talking care of them.
The next day they get money and food. The money is for train tickets to
Limerick. In Limerick they meet their other Grandmother. She is not very Mice

anything about Jesus because the religion in America is different. Their
grandma also says they can't stay with her for long. On a day their
Grandmother finds a room where they can stay. Grandmother pays ten

get a job. A few days after they are settled in the room Angela is moaning in
the bed. She I very white and they think she is sick. Frankie runs to their aunt
