Validity of the Nursing Need Theory
When Virginia Henderson developed the Nursing Need Theory (NNT) she wanted
it to be applicable to all areas of nursing. She wanted the nurses care to be patient focused
and relevant. Through this paper we will better understand the validity and relevancy of
the Nursing Need Theory today. The Nursing Need Theory has consistently proven its
value and need in today’s nursing, we will discuss multiple studies that outline that it
their empirical data and their use of the NNT theory. We can see this validity through
Bezerra Clares, de Freitas, and Borges’ study and how the NNT provided positive
outcomes to its elderly participants. We also can see this through Ahtisham and Jacoline’s
study focused on a patient hospitalized with acute injury based on a suicide attempt and
see this patients fully recovery based on the NNT.
Generalizability of the Nursing Need Theory
The NNT provides an excellent backdrop to most any study. Virginia Henderson
provided a outline of 14 key areas to a patients overall wellness. With even one of those
areas we can focus on how that area can effect over all health. We can see through
Bezerra Clares, de Freitas, and Borges’ study that by decreasing physical limitation we
can increase overall physical mobility. Another study by Ahtisham and Jacoline addresses
the use of all 14 care areas and how by addressing each care area you are ensuring the
patients overall success. While there are limited studies conducted that use the NNT as
the backbone of the study there are numerous articles that use the NNT as their basis for
patient education and independence.
