, NURSING NEED THEORY IN RESEARCH 2

Nursing Need Theory in Research

Virginia Henderson’s Nursing Need Theory (NNT) is a theory that can be used in

every aspect of nursing. Through this paper we will take an in depth look at two different

research studies and how the NNT was used as its framework. We will focus on the use of

the NNT to increase independence through mobility and how the NNT aids in that as our

concept of interest (COI).

Purpose of Research Study 1

The first study we will focus on looks at elderly individuals and the association of

physical mobility and other secondary interactions such as social variables or

illness/disease and how they correlate. The NNT was used to construct the evaluation tool

as well as a tool for education post study. Through this study we are better able to

understand how different variables can affect a patient’s mobility and create disability.

Use of COI/NNT within the Research Study 1

This study used the NNT to develop both the questioner as the main factor in

gathering data (Bezerra Clares, de Freitas, & Borges, 2013). The NNT was also used to

develop nursing interventions for the participants to increase their independence through

mobility. Mobility was broken down into several different topics within the questioner,

then those topics were used to assess the participants over all mobility and impairments to

that mobility (Bezerra Clares, de Freitas, & Borges, 2013). With those outcomes in mind

the data was analyzed to look for correlations among the population. The NNT was then

used again to develop interventions for each specific population (Bezerra Clares, de

Freitas, & Borges, 2013). Through the use of the NNT we were better able to identify and
