PHIL 347 WEEK 3 CHECKPOINT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS SOLUTION According to the text, how do the views of stronger, more developed critical thinkers toward authority differ from those in earlier stages of cognitive development? (pg. 116- 117) Briefly, in your own words, state how the text defines “ expert.” (pg. 134) When presented with a claim unsupported by reasons (for example, “the health risks of vaping have been underestimated”), what three options does a critical thinker have to evaluate such a claim? (pg. 115-116 – last sentence on 115, going into 116) Is the following statement true or untrue? Explain your answer. “If a claim cannot be confirmed by an independent investigation, then it must be false.” (pg. 130- 131) Is the following statement true or untrue? Explain your answer. “If we do not believe that a claim is true, then we must believe that the claim is false.” (pg. 132-33) What four conditions must an argument meet if we are to accept the worthiness and reasonableness of its conclusions? To the best of our knowledge and understanding, the reason is true. The logical relationship between the reason and the claim is such that the reason implies, entails, strongly warrants or strongly supports the claim, such that the claim must be true or very probably true if the reason is assumed to be true. The relevance of the reason to the claim is such that the truth of the claim actually depends on the truth of the reason. The flow of the reasoning is such that truth of reason must not depend on the truth of the claim. In an argument with two or more independent reasons, if one of those reasons turns out to be false, how does a critical thinker apply the test of logical strength to the argument? Should the critical thinker reject such an argument? Explain your answer. Erwin is charged with statutory rape, which is defined as a having sex with a minor, a person under the age of 18. Erwin argues: “You can’t arrest me just because she’s 17 and I’m 21. Yes, we had sex, but it was consensual, plus she will be 18 in two weeks, and we are planning to get married.” Which of the four tests of worthiness does Erwin’s argument fail? Explain your answer. Pg. 143 Go to Individual Exercises at the end of Chapter 7 and evaluate Example 4, which begins “If God intended marriage…” Assume the premises are true. Applying only tests 2, 3, and 4 (logical strength, relevance and non-circularity), what condition of worthiness and reasonableness does this argument not meet? Explain your answer. (pg. 143-147; I chose logical strength) Janet says: “Daria is not a person of color, so I see no reason why we should listen to her on the issue of minority race relations. Jose is Hispanic; he’s the one we should listen to.” As a critical thinker, can you describe, in your own words, the flaw in Janet’s claim? Once you have completed your description in your own words, state which of the tests of worthiness and reasonableness Janet’s argument fails and which fallacy she commits.

Question 1
pts
According to the text, how do the views of stronger, more developed critical thinkers
toward authority differ from those in earlier stages of cognitive development?
Your Answer:
According to the textbook, the views of stronger, more developed critical thinkers toward
authority differ from those in earlier stages of cognitive development because critical
thinkers are inquisitive truth0seekers that approach context and situations with a healthy
sense of skepticism. Also, A strong critical thinker will initiate their own analysis and dig
deeper to find clarity in the meaning. Additionally, critical thinkers are ranked "sages"
and "truth-seekers" on the level of thinking and knowledge. An individual with expertise
can be viewed as an authority. Nonetheless, an individual who is potentially a
trustworthy source of information can be referred to as an authority figure. Whereas in
the earlier stages of cognitive development, an example of authority to a child would be
their parents, guardians, teachers, grandparents. With that mindset, the level of thinking
and knowing, such as "touchers" and "trusters" will take any word from the authority at
face value and without question trust what is being said.

Question 2
pts
Briefly, in your own words, state how the text defines “expert.”
Your Answer:
In my own words, the definition of "expert" in our text is defined as a person who has
thoroughly achieved a profound experience and understanding of a skill or context they
can demonstrate with confidence and clarity and it can be utilized in the field of work.
