According to the text, how do the views of stronger, more developed critical thinkers
toward authority differ from those in earlier stages of cognitive development?
Your Answer:
According to the textbook, the views of stronger, more developed critical thinkers toward
authority differ from those in earlier stages of cognitive development because critical
thinkers are inquisitive truth0seekers that approach context and situations with a healthy
sense of skepticism. Also, A strong critical thinker will initiate their own analysis and dig
deeper to find clarity in the meaning. Additionally, critical thinkers are ranked "sages"
and "truth-seekers" on the level of thinking and knowledge. An individual with expertise
can be viewed as an authority. Nonetheless, an individual who is potentially a
trustworthy source of information can be referred to as an authority figure. Whereas in
the earlier stages of cognitive development, an example of authority to a child would be
their parents, guardians, teachers, grandparents. With that mindset, the level of thinking
and knowing, such as "touchers" and "trusters" will take any word from the authority at
face value and without question trust what is being said.
