Presentation week 5 – 19 March
PowerPoint
Hello, my name is Margo and today I would like to tell you something about
privacy versus safety.
PowerPoint
I chose this topic, first because I saw this interesting statement when I was filling
out an electoral guide for the Dutch elections. So this statement really got me
thinking. And also because this topic is related to the subject of law studies which
I am following the first and this third semester.
PowerPoint
First a little introduction of the topic. The central statement says that the
resident’s privacy may be restricted to increase the national safety. So this
means, for example that the government may use cameras and collect and save
personal data to provide more safety. But this also affects the privacy of the
residents. This is a difficult statement that has caused much discussion. There are
proponents as well as opponents. So I would like to discuss the most important
pros and cons. And of course I will conclude with my opinion.
PowerPoint
I will start with the pros, the proponents say that:
An important argument is that if you don't do anything wrong, you have nothing
to hide. So for example if you are filmed by camera, there is nothing for the
government to see on it. So it really doesn’t matter.
Secondly, the society in general is more important than the individual interest.
Take the corona crisis as an example. Here too there are opponents, but the
measures serve to protect the great majority.
Research has also shown that the costs are also lower in the long term. Because
if you invest in things like camera’s, security programs for personal date,
etcetera, that would be less expensive in the long term than the damage that a
possible incident could cause. Like a terrorist attack where there are many
injured people and there is a lot of physical damage.
Not to mention that people feel that they are watched in public places, which
means they think better before doing something stupid with leads to fewer
crimes.
Finally, personal data is everywhere these days. Keep in mind that you leave
personal information behind by only accepting cookies on a website. Why should
a government not be allowed to use this data, but online shops that handle your
data a lot less carefully should?
