LISTEN UP KIDS, THIS IS WHY
YOU SHOULD NOT DO DRUGS!
Everybody has been told at least once not to use drugs. It is dangerous, addicting and overall just a
no go. Well, that is just a bunch of nonsense. What if I told you that legalizing drugs would bring
more benefits with it than prohibit using them? Now, I’m not saying you should go and buy heroin
from some sketchy drug dealer. After all, drugs do come with some nasty consequences. I’m telling
you that legalizing drugs would bring many solutions to crime-related problems, benefit our economy
and educate our people more.
Legalizing drugs would put an end to drug trafficking. Criminals will not be able to profit from the
drug traffic, all the drug related revenues will go straight to the government. This way, the black
market will cease to exist and eventually, the criminality rate will drop. This means that the police
will be able to focus on more serious crimes. They won’t have to worry about drug related crimes
and fight it with violence. Not only will there be less criminality, prison overcrowding won’t be a
problem anymore too. Most inmates serve time for drug law violations. Legalizing drugs would put
an end to this. There would be no more “drug offenders” to put behind bars, since they no longer
need to commit violent or property crime to pay for their habits. If we repeal the drug laws, we could
bring the prison population down below the prison’s capacity.
Next to benefiting the criminal justice system, legalizing drugs would also have a positive effect on
our economy. The legalization of drugs would save BILLIONS of dollars. Right now, the government
spends this money in the war against drugs. Billions of dollars spent on police, corrections and courts
just to wage war against drugs. And who pays for this war? The ones that pay taxes. Legalizing drugs
would mean that we can spend this money more wisely, for example on drug treatment, drug
education or law enforcements initiatives targeting more serious crimes.
Some may still be skeptical about legalizing drugs, but fail to realize that drug legalization means that
our public health will be better. We could educate more people about the effects of drugs and how
to use them safely. Using the money that would be used to fight drugs, we could install
establishments giving them the opportunity to educate people on how to use drugs and provide true
and accurate information. This way, drug users have easier access to this knowledge and therefore
know how to use it safely.
In conclusion, the pros outweigh the cons. Legalizing drugs only brings benefits, in every way you can
think of. Criminality? Don’t worry, our criminal justice system will improve. No more prison
overcrowding, drug trafficking and a lower criminality rate. Economy? No stress, our tax money
would be spent on educating people. The public health? Relax, more educated people means that
people will use drugs in moderation. The risk of overdosing is way smaller and it is less likely that
someone will become an addict if they know what the consequences of drug use are. Legalizing drugs
bring a lot of benefits. Before you know it, asking: “Yo, wanna roll one tonight?” will be the same as
asking someone about their day.
